Laura Leigh Burton, 49, of Blacksburg, passed away Friday, August 7, 2009, at Duke University Hospital. She was born in Bluefield, W.Va., on December 2, 1959. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harry and Margaret Burton. She received her B. S. of nursing from West Virginia University and her M. S. of nursing from Radford University. Laura was a practicing nurse for 28 years and for the last 11 years served the Blacksburg community as a Family Nurse Practitioner for Family Medicine of Blacksburg. She is survived by her husband, Jim Burton; her daughters, Laura Leigh and Caitlin Alexis; and her son, Christian Alexander, all of Blacksburg; her parents, Kenneth and Emma Doughton, of Christiansburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Kim and Randy Lester, of Blacksburg; three brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Judy Doughton, of Roanoke, Va., Chuck and Judy Doughton, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Shea Doughton, of Pittsburgh, Pa. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church where Laura and her family are members. The Rev. Paul Wharton and the Rev. Mr. Don Hammond, Deacon will celebrate the Mass of Resurrection. Dr. Tommy McDearis will deliver a tribute to the life of Laura. Interment will follow at the Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made for Laura to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston through her nephew, Cory Lester's Pan Massachusetts Challenge Fund Raising. The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg, Tuesday August 11, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 8 p.m.
